Xander Schauffele delivered the best finish of his 2026 season in his Rocket Classic debut, closing solo second at Detroit Golf Club and finishing two shots behind first-time PGA TOUR winner Michael Thorbjornsen.
The week in Detroit was a clear step forward: a full four rounds in contention, a share of the lead on Sunday’s front nine, and a free-swinging mindset Xander said he wanted to reclaim heading into the final stretch of the season.
A debut week that almost became a win
Xander held a piece of the lead after a tidy 4-under front nine on Sunday. A poor drive on the 13th led to a bogey, he bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 14th, then missed a short birdie look on 15 before rolling in a 16-footer for birdie on the 18th.
It was not quite enough. Thorbjornsen charged home with a 7-under 63, the round of the day, and claimed his first PGA TOUR title by two.
Xander’s take was straightforward and classy:
“I feel good. You know, I fell short, but I played well. (Thorbjornsen) just played … he played incredible. If you look at his stretch for the last 12 holes, he played incredible golf. I played really well and he just beat me straight up, so hats off to him.”
“Nothing-to-lose” mentality
Before the FedExCup stretch, Xander came to Michigan looking for feel, not pressure. Ten years and two majors into his career, he wanted the same free mentality he talked about as a rookie.
“I wanted to come here and get a few feels, I guess, in play and kind of just freewheel it with sort of a nothing-to-lose mentality. I felt like I spoke about that when I was a rookie on TOUR. I’m trying to be free and if I hit loose shots, I hit loose shots, but feel free when I’m swinging – and I think we did a pretty good job of that.”

That approach showed. Solo second at the Rocket Classic tops his previous best of 2026 (solo third at THE PLAYERS) and sits above a solid spring run that included a T4 at Valspar, a T9 at the Masters, another top-10 at the PGA Championship, and a top-20 at The Open Championship.
